OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Democratic leaders in Olympia say they’ll hold hearings on three initiatives aimed at undoing recent legislation and send three others directly to voters.

Senate Majority Leader Andy Billig and Speaker of the House Laurie Jinkins announced Friday that they’ll allow consideration of initiatives dealing with police pursuits, income taxes and parental rights.

They’ll ignore initiatives that would undo the Climate Commitment Act, repeal the capital gains tax and allow all workers to opt out of the state’s long-term care program.

Billig and Jinkins say those three measures would “devastate progress” on education, childcare, climate action and aging with dignity. Sending them to the ballot will allow voters, in their words, “to decide what sort of state they want to live in.”

They say the impacts of the other three are “less obvious,” and hearings will allow lawmakers to get more information and input from the public before making decisions. They could then pass them as is, send them to the ballot, or offer alternatives to voters.
