OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Students in Washington are showing promising growth in their math skills but need improvement in their reading.
That’s according to a new report from the state Superintendent’s Office that revealed testing data from this year’s spring assessments. Students in grades 3-8 and 10 were tested and math comprehension rose across almost all grade levels, as it has in every year since 2021. The report notes that math scores saw the largest decrease during the pandemic.
Meanwhile, English language arts scores have slightly dropped across nearly every grade level compared to the past few years.
State Superintendent Chris Reykdal says that’s in line with national trends and the state is doubling down on its focus on early literacy in particular.
Reykdal’s 2025 budget proposal will include funds for an artificial intelligence reading tool where students can practice reading aloud and receive immediate, personalized feedback.
