KING COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Four Washington State Patrol vehicles were hit by impaired drivers within a span of four hours over the weekend.
Washington State Patrol (WSP) says no one was injured following the crashes, which took place in King County from late Saturday, Nov. 23, into early Sunday morning.
The first incident occurred around 11 p.m. when a trooper noticed a vehicle next to him at a stop light with the driver seemingly asleep at the wheel. The trooper moved his patrol car in front of the vehicle to prevent it from rolling into the intersection but was struck in the process.
The next two collisions came just before 3 a.m. when a vehicle on southbound I-5 hit two different State Patrol cars that were stopped at the scene of a hit and run collision.
Shortly after that crash, another trooper arriving at the scene was hit by a separate vehicle.
All three drivers were arrested for suspected impairment.
State Patrol Chief Jon Batiste says the incidents show the dangers that troopers face every day in what were fully avoidable collisions.
