SEATTLE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Tesla has hit and killed a motorcyclist near Seattle, and the driver claims that the vehicle was using Autopilot.
The Tesla Model S’s driver told WSP he was looking at his phone at the time of the crash in a suburban area 15 miles northeast of Seattle around 3:45 p.m. on Friday, April 19. The 56-year-old was arrested for investigation of vehicular homicide and investigators have yet to confirm whether Autopilot was in use.
The motorcyclist, 28-year-old Jeffrey Nissen of Stanwood, was under the car and pronounced dead at the scene.
U.S. auto regulators pressured Tesla to recall more than 2 million vehicles about four months ago for faulty tech that would make drivers pay attention to the road while Autopilot was engaged. Experts have described the monitoring systems in place as not adequate for making sure Tesla drivers keep their eyes on the road.
On Tesla’s website, the company said the cars cannot actually drive themselves despite the name “Autopilot.”
The investigation is still ongoing.
