Mount Baker High School kept its football season alive with consecutive wins over Blaine and Meridian in last night’s Kansas tiebreaker at Blaine High School.

The Mountaineers now head to the Class 1A 24 team play-in bracket, where they’ll go on the road to face Zillah.

With Baker’s win, there are now six Whatcom County schools that have a shot at making it to the state tournament if they survive this weekend’s newly-expanded play-in bracket.

The Kraken are looking to end their road trip on a high note tonight.

They’re facing the Colorado Avalanche with a chance to snap their three-game skid.

The struggling Kraken have been shutout in their last two games and have just one win over their last seven matches.

But they’ll have a chance to rebound against an Avalanche team that’s on a three-game losing streak of its own.

Coverage for tonight’s game begins at 5:30 and puck drops at 6:00 on KPUG.

The college basketball season is off and running.

6th nationally ranked Gonzaga thumped 8th ranked Baylor 101-63 last night to start their season off strong.

Washington State kept up the high scoring with a 100-92 win over Portland St.

Washington is playing their home opener at 7:00 tonight against UC Davis.

Meanwhile, the Huskies’ and Cougs’ women’s teams each earned wins yesterday, while Gonzaga’s women’s squad opens its season tonight against Montana.

Speaking of UW basketball, the Huskies made a historic announcement recently.

The university has decided to retire Kelsey Plum’s No. 10 jersey.

It will be the first Huskies women’s basketball player to have her jersey retired.

Plum played guard at Washington from 2013 to 2017, where she became the then-leading scorer in D-1 women’s basketball history and led the Huskies to their first-ever Final Four appearance in 2016.

Her jersey retirement ceremony will take place when the team hosts Purdue on Jan. 18.

A couple of Seattle Mariners brought home some hardware earlier this week.

Catcher Cal Raleigh and utility man Dylan Moore both won Gold Gloves for their efforts on defense during the 2024 season.

It wasn’t a surprise for Cal, who was a lock to win the award after catching 135 games and over 1,100 innings, the most in MLB.

It was a surprise for Moore however, who used his Swiss Army knife like skills and played at least 22 games at shortstop, third base, second base and left field.

It was the first Gold Glove awards for both players.

And Mitch Haniger will remain in Seattle for another season.

The M’s right fielder declined to exercise his opt out yesterday and will stay on a $15.5 million contract for next year.

Haniger played five seasons with the Mariners before signing with the Giants in 2023.

But he was traded right back to Seattle last January in a trade for Robbie Ray.

The 33-year-old hit a disappointing .208 in 121 games last season with 12 home runs and 44 RBI.
