The opening round of the high school basketball district tournament is wrapping up.
The Mount Baker girls beat Blaine 43-35 last night and the Baker boys followed with a tight 47-46 win over Blaine to end the Borderites’ season.
Both Baker teams now face Lynden Christian tomorrow in the second round of districts.
Meanwhile, in Class 2A play, the Bellingham girls kept their season alive with a 54-20 win over Marysville-Pilchuck.
They now move on to face undefeated Lynden tomorrow night.
Coming up tonight, the Sehome boys are fighting to extend their season against Marysville-Pilchuck.
That game tips off at 7:00 from Sehome High School.
The winner will face undefeated Lynden on Thursday.
Also tonight, the Lummi boys and girls are hosting the 1B District 1 championships.
The Blackhawk girls take the court first against Concrete as they try to push their win streak to nine.
After that, the Lummi boys tip off against Tulalip Heritage at 8:00 in the tiebreaking match of a rivalry that saw the schools split their regular season series.
No matter what happens tonight, all four teams will advance to tri-districts next week.
The Seattle Kraken are on an extended break as the NHL Four Nations Face-Off tournament kicks off tomorrow.
It’s a round-robin tourney replacing the NHL all-star game featuring four national teams rostered with players from around the league.
Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States will battle it out for world domination culminating in the Championship Game next Thursday, Feb. 20.

A man accused of shoving two teen youth hockey referees to the ice during a game on Sunday is facing two assault charges.
A video shows the 42-year-old man walking onto the ice at the Kraken Community Iceplex in Seattle and pushing two referees down.
The man claims the refs did nothing after his son was punched and kicked by a player on the other team for about 30 seconds.
The incident occurred during a 12U rec hockey game and the two officials who were shoved are 13 and 14 years old, according to the Pacific Northwest Amatuer Hockey Association.
