It was wild Saturday in the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off.

Finland battled to a 4 to 3 overtime win over Sweden to stay alive in the tournament.

Kraken forward Kappo Kakko assisted on a second period goal to tie it up for Finland before Mikael Granland scored the game winner in OT.

And the US-Canada matchup didn’t disappoint.

After Canadian fans booed the US national anthem, the game started off with three fights in the first nine seconds of play.

After the dust settled, the US pulled away for the 3 to 1 win, clinching a spot in the tournament final.

Canada went on to edge Finland 5-3 this afternoon to set up a rematch with the US in the championship on Thursday.

The Western Washington University women showed out for Mark Scholten Night on Saturday.

The Viks recovered from a slow first quarter to beat Alaska Fairbanks 68-50.

The game began with an emotional tribute to legendary broadcaster Mark Scholten and his parents were gifted a framed Vikings basketball jersey.

Former Lynden Christian standout Demi Dykstra went on to lead the way with 20 points to help the Viks clinch a spot in the GNAC Tournament.

The men continued Western’s weekend success with a 91-81 win over Saint Martin’s.

Sophomore Tijan Saine scored 29 points to follow up his career-high 37 point effort days before.

His 66-point week earned him GNAC Player of the Week honors.

The Viking men have now won nine of their last 10 games.

They’ve pulled themselves up to fourth place in the GNAC standings with just three games to go in the regular season.

The UW men earned a thrilling win over the weekend.

DJ Davis hit a late three to lift the Huskies over Penn State 75-73 on Saturday.

Washington trailed at halftime, but they rallied in the second to hand Penn State its seventh straight loss.

It was the first ever meeting between the two programs.

Meanwhile, the UW women nearly pulled off a colossal upset.

The Huskies led 6th nationally ranked USC by as many as 12 points last night, but couldn’t complete the upset and fell to the Trojans 69-64.

Washington’s Sayvia Sellers led all scorers with 24 points and they held one of the nation’s top players in JuJu Watkins to 17 points.

The Huskies women have shown they can compete with the best of the best: they’re 0-4 against top 10 teams this season, but all four games were decided by 10 points or less.

And WWU softball seems to be back on track after a rough start to the season.

Western went 6-0 at the Hawai’i Invitational tournament in Honolulu over the weekend.

The 10th nationally ranked Viks went 1-4 in their first tournament of the season, but have now brought their record up to 7-4.

Their pitching dominated the trip, allowing just two total runs over the first five games of the weekend.

Seniors Joie Baker and Emma Andrewjeski-Ramirez swept the GNAC Softball Player of the Week awards for their performances.

Baker went undefeated with just a single run allowed in her three starts to earn Pitcher of the Week.

And Andrewjeski-Ramirez hit .550 at the plate with 12 RBI and a pair of home runs to take home Player of the Week.
