The Mariners fell short on Opening Day last night.

Seattle lost to the Boston Red Sox 6-4 at T-Mobile Park.

Luis Castillo gave up four runs over five innings in the start.

Mitch Haniger and Dylan Moore each hit home runs in the loss for the M’s.

It was a big day for Red Sox slugger Tyler O’Neill, who hit a home run in his fifth-straight Opening Day to set an MLB record.

The M’s will host the Red Sox in the second of their four-game series tonight.

Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KGMI.

Nelson Cruz will retire as a Mariner.

Cruz threw out the first pitch last night before signing a one-day contract with Seattle.

He joined the M’s as a free agent in 2015 for the first of four seasons with the team.

Cruz was named an All Star for three of those seasons and hit 167 home runs over his time in Seattle.

The 43-year-old announced his retirement back in November after a season with the Padres, but says he always identified as a Mariner despite playing more seasons with other teams.

The Kraken managed to avoid playoff elimination for another day.

They beat Anaheim 4-2 last night for their second win over the Ducks in three days.

The Kraken led 1-0 going into the third period, but two quick goals by the Ducks in the opening three minutes had Seattle playing from behind.

They rallied to score the next three goals, including the game-winner by Tye Kartye with just under seven minutes left.

Kartye was also the victim of a cross-check by Ducks forward Ryan Strome that earned him a $5,000 fine.

The Kraken’s next game is against the Dallas Stars at 7 p.m. tomorrow on KBAI.

Gonzaga is fighting for a spot in the Elite 8 tonight as the last West Coast representative.

Arizona and San Diego State were each bounced from the tournament yesterday.

That leaves the Zags as the final school from out west.

A team west of Texas hasn’t won the national tournament since Arizona in 1997.

The fifth-seeded Zags are facing their toughest challenge yet in Zach Edey and top-seeded Purdue.

NC State-Marquette, Duke-Houston and Creighton-Tennessee round out the final Sweet 16 games.

Coverage for today’s tournament action tips off at 4:00 on KPUG.

The Washington State women are moving on to their version of the Final Four.

The top-seeded Cougs edged Toledo 63-61 yesterday to advance to the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament semifinals.

WSU came back from down four with under a minute left, capped off by a game-winning jumper with three seconds to go to steal the win.

They’ll face fourth-seeded Illinois on Monday with a ticket to the championship game on the line.

And former Husky Michael Penix Jr. put on a show at pro day yesterday.

Penix ran a sub-4.6-second 40 yard dash in a welcome sign for the scouts present at UW.

His speed has been under question after rushing for just 8 yards on 35 attempts last season.

Penix  put a bow on the performance by airing out a 75-yard pass.

He’s currently projected to go in the mid-first to early-second round in next month’s NFL Draft.
