The Mariners won their opening game against the Brave last night in thrilling fashion.

Mitch Garver hit a walk-off two-run homer to lift Seattle over Atlanta 2-1.

The game had been dominated by pitching up until that point, with both starters carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

It was the first time that happened since 2021.

Bryce Miller allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out ten batters through seven innings in the start.

The Mariners had managed just two hits until the ninth inning, when Jorge Polanco singled and Garver drove him in with the walk-off shot.

The Mariners are now 10-3 over the past two weeks following last night’s win over the league-leading Braves.

They’ll rematch tonight in the middle game of their series with Luis Castillo on the mound for the M’s.

Western Washington University’s rowing team came up golden at their biggest race of the season.

Both Vikings varsity teams earned gold medals at Sunday’s Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships in California.

Western’s primary varsity team won the grand final by finishing the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes 52 seconds, about eight seconds faster than the second place team.

That performance earned them recognition as the GNAC Crew of the Week.

The second varsity team followed with a come-from-behind victory to earn gold in their race as well.

The Viking rowers are back on Saturday for the opening of the Windermere Cup on Montlake Cut.

 

Meanwhile, the Western softball team closed out its historic regular season with another record.

The Vikings won three out of four games against Western Oregon over the weekend to set a program record for wins with 39.

Freshman Kaiana Kong was selected as the GNAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for throwing nearly nine innings of shutout ball with no walks across all four games.

The team also secured the No. 2 seed at this week’s GNAC Championships, which are being played at Viking Field right here in Bellingham.

The 13th nationally ranked Vikings open the tournament on Thursday with a noon game against third-seeded Saint Martin’s.
