The Mariners are back against the Yankees today as they hope to build on momentum from yesterday’s ninth-inning rally.

The M’s were down 4-1 heading into the final frame when an error by the Yankees and RBI’s from Mitch Haniger and Dominic Canzone tied the game.

Ty France went on to hit a two-out single to score Haniger for the winning run.

Andres Munoz threw a scoreless ninth inning to secure his ninth save of the season.

Logan Gilbert gave up three runs through six innings in the start.

Luke Raley kept up his hot hitting with a 3-4 day at the plate, making it 14 hits over his last seven games.

The M’s will rematch against the American League-leading Yankees today in the second of their four-game series.

The Vancouver Canucks had their season ended last night.

A late-game rally wasn’t enough as the Canucks lost to the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals.

Edmonton scored the first three goals of the game before Vancouver answered with a pair of goals in the third period, but it was too little, too late.

It was the first time the Canucks lost back-to-back games in nearly two months.

The conference finals are now set in the Stanley Cup playoffs, with the Oilers facing the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference and the Florida Panthers going up against the New York Rangers in the East.

 

The shorthanded Seattle Storm fell to the New York Liberty 74-63 yesterday.

The league-leading Liberty opened with a 27-15 first quarter and never looked back as they improved to 4-0 on the season.

The Sounders dropped to 1-3 as stars Jewell Loyd and Skylar Diggins-Smith both struggled with their shooting.

The Storm played their second game without All-Star forward Nneka Ogwumike, who has been out with an ankle injury she suffered in Friday’s loss to the Lynx.

This year’s #1 overall pick Caitlin Clark is coming to town for the Storm’s next match.

They’re hosting the Indiana Fever tomorrow at 7 p.m.

 

Western Washington University’s softball team is still alive after an elimination game win this afternoon.

The fourth-seeded Vikings beat top-seeded Auburn University at Montgomery 7-1 to advance to the NCAA D-II World Series Final Four.

Freshman Maleah Andrews hit a 2-run home run in the third inning to give the Vikings an early lead.

Hailey Rath hit a bases-loaded double in the fifth that scored three and opened up the game.

Emma Andrewjeski-Ramirez followed with a 2-run home run to give the Viks a 7-1 advantage.

The Vikings move on to face fourth-seeded University of Indianapolis tomorrow at 11 a.m.

They’ll have to beat them twice in order to move on to the World Series Final.

 

Meanwhile, the Vikings’ rowing team are GNAC champions.

The No. 2 nationally-ranked Viks beat the next best team by nearly two boat lengths on Saturday to move on to the national meet.

It’s the second time Western has won the conference championship in the four-year history of the event.

The NCAA Championships take place on Friday and Saturday in Bethel, OH.

Western will be one of six schools competing for the national title.

 

WWU’s club rugby teams capped off a successful season over the weekend.

The men’s team beat Oregon 21-0 to secure the College Rugby Association of America’s national championship on Sunday.

It followed the women’s national championship win earlier this month.

The number 1 seeded Sehome boys are still alive in the 2A state soccer tournament after downing Fife 3-0 on Saturday. 

They’ll face East Valley – Yakima in the semi-final Friday afternoon at Renton Memorial Stadium. 

The Squalicum boys are out after losing to Franklin Pierce 4-3 on Saturday.

 

Moving on to baseball…

The Lynden boys take on Columbia River in the 2A semifinal Friday morning. The game will be at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham.

In the 1A semifinal, Meridian takes on Cedar Park Christian on Friday afternoon at Joe Martin.
