WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Three of the four statewide initiatives are failing following the preliminary election results were announced on Tuesday night.
Nearly 62% of voters chose to uphold Washington’s Climate Commitment Act, which forces companies to cut carbon emissions by establishing a tax credit system.
Just over 63% voted against I-2109, which sought to repeal the state’s capital gains tax.
In a slightly closer race, over 55% voted against I-2124, which would have allowed workers to opt out of the new long-term care tax.
The sole initiative that’s passing is I-2066, which would prohibit the state from enacting laws or regulations to discourage the use of natural gas. It’s garnered just over 51% support from voters in the closest race of all four initiatives, which were sponsored by the conservative political action committee Let’s Go Washington.
Meanwhile, at a local level, a proposed amendment to the Whatcom County Charter is passing with flying colors. Over 84% of voters approved the amendment, which would prohibit elected county officers from holding more than one elected position in public office at a time.
