BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Bellingham man was killed following a crash that closed I-5 for several hours.
Washington State Patrol spokesperson Anthony Reese says troopers were called to a one car rollover on NB I-5 near the Bellis Fair Mall around 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday night.
The driver proceeded to run across the freeway when first responders arrived, jumped the cable barrier and was hit by a car while crossing the SB lane.
The man, identified as 24-year-old Sean Smet, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers say that the driver of the car driving south, identified as a 36-year-old Mount Vernon woman, was not hurt.
All lanes of SB I-5 and part of the NB lanes were shut down near the mall until 10 p.m.
The cause of the initial crash remains under investigation.
