BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A pair of Bellingham parks were hit by joyriding vandals over the past few days.
Bellingham Police received a report of someone driving on the turf at Boulevard Park and doing donuts at around 2:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. The car was gone by the time police arrived.
City Parks Operations Manager Steve Janiszewski says his staff found more damaged turf at Ridgemont Park the day prior, which they believe to have occurred the night before.
Janiszewski estimates the damage at Boulevard will cost between $3,000 and $5,000 to repair and $500 to $1,000 at the smaller Ridgemont Park.
Neither park will be closed during the repairs.
Janiszewski says the city is planning to install a new and improved gate near the railroad tracks at Boulevard in the coming months. The current gate was not closed during the latest incident, but Janiszewski says they are working on a plan to start locking some park gates around the city at night due to ongoing vandalism.
The Bellingham Police Department is actively investigating both incidents.
