OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A frontrunner in the race for Washington’s next governor is sounding off after a seeming attempt to confuse voters.
Two candidates named “Bob Ferguson” filed for state governor as Democrats just before last Friday’s candidate filing deadline.
It came four days after current Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed for the same position.
Right wing activist Glen Morgan said in a social media post that he is the volunteer campaign manager for the two other Fergusons and calls them “superior in every way” to the current AG.
AG Ferguson pushed back against Morgan in a press conference on the morning of May 13.
“It’s clear what’s going on. Anti-democracy Republicans orchestrated a deceptive and illegal scheme to deceive voters and illegally influence the election,” Ferguson said.
It is illegal under Washington law to give a surname similar to a candidate with a well-known political reputation who has already filed for the same office with the intent of confusing or misleading electors.
Former King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg says he was “offended” by the situation and calls the action a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Both of the Fergusons withdrew from the race before Monday’s deadline, leaving AG Ferguson as the only one that will appear on the ballot.
