WHATCOM COUNTY, WA. – (MyBellinghamNow.com) A pair of new clean energy projects in Whatcom County will look to lower energy bills for qualifying residents.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Monday its plans to invest $157 million for over 600 projects across the United States, including seven in Washington.

Lil’ Scoop Bobcat Inc. is a freight hauling business based out of Bellingham, WA that will receive just over $20,000 to install a collection of solar panels. Spring Time Farm LLC, a vegetable and flower farm based in Everson, will also receive over $27,000 to install solar panels.

The USDA estimates the plans will save a combined $3,500 per year with the renewable energy the solar panels generate.

Washington Director for USDA Rural Development Helen Johnson says the projects will bring many benefits to the area.

“By powering small, rural businesses with renewable, clean energy infrastructure, we’re going to have more good paying jobs and more opportunities for people all across our state,” says Johnson.

The grants were made through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) which helps expand clean energy opportunities for agricultural producers and small business owners.

REAP applications can be submitted to the USDA through September 30.
