LUMMI ISLAND, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Two people were hospitalized after a car accident at the Lummi Island ferry dock on Wednesday, May 15.

Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Deb Slater says a van turned into the loading terminal on S. Nugent Rd. around 1 p.m. and drove around a line of vehicles boarding the ferry.

The van then drove through a sign and over a concrete curb before crashing onto the boulders supporting the terminal at the edge of the waterline.

The van’s two occupants were able to free themselves and were helped up by others nearby.

Both occupants were treated for minor injuries and transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.

The Whatcom Chief was put out of service for about an hour while crews removed the van from the waterline. The ferry dock suffered minor damage that Slater says should not affect ferry service.
