Two separate wrong way driving incidents in Whatcom County end with one arrest

No injuries were reported in either incident.

WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Washington State Patrol (WSP) responded to two separate incidents this past weekend involving wrong way drivers in Whatcom County.

WSP Trooper Kelsey Harding says that a driver witnessed another car travelling backwards on I-5 early Saturday south of Bellingham. Responding troopers found the car heading south in the northbound lanes.

WSP learned that the driver was experiencing a mental health crisis and were able to safely remove them from the freeway.

On Monday morning, troopers pulled over a second wrong-way driver heading south in the northbound lanes near Ferndale. That driver, identified as a 45-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

No one was injured in either incident.
