BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The identities of a suspect in the overdose death of a Whatcom County Jail inmate and the man who died have been released.
The Bellingham Police Department is leading the investigation into the incident on March 13 that also left another inmate hospitalized.
Department spokesperson Megan Peters says the investigation found 38-year-old Angel Leffingwell was observed moving between his cell and that of the two men who overdosed. Another inmate pushed an alert to summon corrections officers just after 10 a.m. and they found 28-year-old Andre Haas and his cellmate unconscious.
They were able to revive the cellmate, but Haas died.
Leffingwell was in jail after he was found in possession of narcotics following a police chase in February. He now faces charges of Controlled Substance Homicide, Possession of a Controlled Substance by a Prisoner and two counts of Delivery of a Controlled Substance.
Police haven’t released information about how the drugs were brought into the jail.
