LYNDEN, WA. – (MyBellinghamNow.com) No people were hurt in a barn fire near Lynden on Wednesday afternoon.

Whatcom County Fire District 14 Assistant Chief David Moe says the fire started in the 2600 block of Pangborn Road around 2:40 pm.

Units from Fire District 14 and District 1 spent over two hours trying to contain it.

Moe says they were able to save about half of the 3100 square foot barn, though one pig was lost in the fire.

The existing half of the barn suffered water and smoke damage, while the other half is completely destroyed in what is estimated to be at least $50,000 in damages.

The barn’s owner, Lane Stremler, says he doesn’t know if the existing half is salvageable. He says the barn was built in 1908 and was used as a chicken barn until the 1960’s.

This was the second fire the barn has suffered. Stremler recalls that a less destructive one was contained around 30 years ago.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office.
