OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Election officials from Washington are calling on a major media mogul to stop the spread of voting misinformation.

Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs was one of five Secretaries of State that sent a public letter to Elon Musk asking him to cut down on election misinformation on his platform X (formerly Twitter).

They say that X’s AI search assistant, called Grok, generated incorrect information after President Joe Biden announced that he would end his reelection campaign on July 21.

Grok falsely stated that the ballot deadline has passed for nine states, including Washington. That implied that there couldn’t be any changes to the candidate lineup in those states and the new nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, would not appear.

Grok continued to repeat the false information for more than a week until it was corrected on July 31.

The five Secretaries of State are asking Musk to direct Grok users to CanIVote.org when giving information about U.S. elections to avoid any inaccuracies by the AI assistant.

CanIVote.org is a nonpartisan website that offers up-to-date election resources to help U.S. residents figure out how and where to go vote.
