WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Washington has become the most expensive state to buy gas in the country.

AAA reports that the average gallon of gas in the state costs about $4.66, which places Washington just above California as the priciest state.

It’s also nearly 47% higher than the national average.

Prices in Whatcom County and across the state have jumped an average of 20 cents per gallon over the past week.

AAA attributes the increase to the temporary shutdown of the Olympic Pipeline, which transports fuel from Washington to Oregon.

Relief should be on the horizon, though, as Oregon Public Broadcasting reports that the pipeline resumed deliveries on Friday.

That, paired with AAA’s report that gas demand is falling as drivers settle into their fall routines, should signal a drop in prices at the pump in the coming weeks.
