OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – There’s still help available for marginalized youth in crisis, even after a specialized support line was recently discontinued.

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) says the LGBTQI+ Youth Subnetwork of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline shut down last week on federal orders.

“We’re deeply concerned about the loss of this vital service,” said Michele Roberts Assistant Secretary for Prevention and Community Health, DOH. “The LGBTQI+ Youth Subnetwork has been critical resource for LGBTQIA2S+ youth and young adults with affirming care tailored to meet their unique needs. While this closure is a setback, our commitment to protecting and improving the health of all Washingtonians remains strong. Our state is ready to serve anyone who contacts 988, including LGBTQIA2S+ youth and young adults.”

The subnetwork had been operating since 2022 as a mental health support outlet tailored for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other high-risk youth ages 13 to 24.

It received an average of over 800 calls and 250 texts per month in Washington, according to the DOH.

Now, the department recommends people call or text the “988 Lifeline,” which offers free, confidential, 24/7 access to crisis counselors.
