BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Washington state leaders are speaking out after President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” cleared its final hurdle out of the House on July 3.

The $4.5 trillion tax breaks and spending cuts bill passed by just four votes, with two Republicans joining all Democrats opposed.

U.S. Representative Rick Larsen was one of the “no” votes and says that the bill’s passage has potentially devastating effects at the local level.

“The estimates are that 34,000-46,000 people in and around Bellingham, Whatcom, Skagit, Island and around the area are going to lose health insurance as a result of the cuts to Medicaid,” Larsen told My Bellingham Now.

Larsen says the state Hospital Association also estimates that the Medicaid cuts would put 14 rural hospitals in Washington at risk of shutting down.

He adds that the bill’s cuts to healthcare and food benefits are essentially a massive transfer of wealth.

“The cuts that are in this bill aren’t being used to reduce the deficit, it’s not reducing spending, it’s going into partially pay for tax cuts for the richest Americans and biggest corporations,” Larsen said.

U.S. Senator Patty Murray said in a statement that the bill’s cuts to clean energy tax credits will also raise costs for farmers across the state.

Governor Bob Ferguson chimed in, calling the bill’s passage “appalling” and a “betrayal of the American people.”

President Trump is expected to sign the bill at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 4.
