NOOKSACK RIVER, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – As a local river sees an abundance of salmon returning to spawn, fishermen are getting more opportunities to catch locally.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has raised the daily catch limit on chum salmon on the Nooksack River. Now, anglers can catch up to four salmon, including no more than two wild coho and no more than two chum.

This affects the Nooksack River between the I-5 bridge in Ferndale to the confluence of the North and South Forks.

WDFW says that the chum returning to the river at a higher than forecasted rate is spurring the rule change.

The daily limit change will be in effect from now through Nov. 30.
