WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Several people from our neck of the woods will be honored on Sept. 25 for their efforts to save lives.
The Washington Governor’s Lifesaving Awards in Tacoma seeks to honor those who have rescued or performed life-saving tasks in the state while on the job. Two groups from northwest Washington will be in attendance.
Whatcom Public Works’ employees will be honored for their efforts in putting out a vehicle fire at the Lummi Ferry this last March. A vehicle caught fire while waiting to board the ferry and Serena Dabney, Kelsey McLane, Eli Miller and Theo White used fire extinguishers to put it out before anyone was hurt.
Also in March, six people and two dogs were rescued in rough seas off the coast of the Rosario Strait when a wave broke the windshield of their vessel. The ferry Samish’s crewmembers Justin Huggins, Justin McCaughan, Brandon Torres and David Wickland assisted a Coast Guard Vessel and the Anacortes Fire Department in the rescue.
