WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Whatcom County is moving forward with a review of a proposed gravel mine near Sumas.

The county says it’s received a proposal to create a 64-acre open-pit rock quarry near the intersection of South Pass and Frost roads.

The site is currently forested and roughly 65 acres of timber would need to be cleared for the proposed project.

Regular operations from gravel supplier Cowden Inc. would involve around 25 trucks passing through the site each day, with traffic potentially doubling during peak periods.

It would also include on-site rock sorting and crushing.

Material produced from the quarry would be used to support construction and maintenance of roads, railroad, ports and other civil infrastructure.

The county is taking written, emailed or online comments for its environmental review through May 29.

The review is expected to be completed in early 2027.
