WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A new law taking effect next week raises fines for certain work zone violations.
WSDOT said that starting on July 1, any driver caught speeding by traffic cameras in a work zone will be fined $125 if they’re caught for the first time.
Additional speeding violations will cost drivers $248 apiece.
Currently, first-time violators are given a warning and no fine.
WSDOT said that within the first year of implementing work zone cameras, over 85,000 drivers were cited for speeding. Over 90% of those drivers didn’t pay a fine because they were first-time violators.
Most cameras caught speeders in western Washington work zones, but the program will expand into eastern parts of the state this summer.
