The cuts have resulted in laboratories having limited testing for some infectious diseases and early childhood learning programs left unsure of future funds, among others.

There are several local offices up for reelection, including four spots on the county council and four spots on the Bellingham City Council.

The Imagination Library has one local program with United Way of Whatcom County and several other partners in Skagit and San Juan counties.

It comes as the Lynden School Board is scheduled to discuss the topic at its meeting on Thursday, May 1.

It comes after the university was forced to make a series of cost-cutting measures last fall.

Union representatives say the cuts will likely result in higher tuition and threaten the university’s most vulnerable workers.

Public comment on the decision will be accepted during the Port of Bellingham’s May 6 meeting.

The governor signed the bill during a slew of signings Wednesday morning, passing a variety of bills into law.

Under the previous budget, LEAD is funded half by the state and half from local entities.
