Whatcom County is in a prime position to see the Aurora Borealis Oct. 9 and Oct. 10, barring any cloud coverage.

The NWS warns all vessel operators who will be on the water to operate with caution.

The National Weather Service says the advisory will remain in effect through Saturday, Sept. 7.

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a heat advisory for western Whatcom and Skagit counties until 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5. 

Forecasters are warning about fire conditions including high heat, increased easterly winds and lower humidity in the mountains on Thursday.

The National Weather Service is predicting thunderstorms to hit parts of western Washington this week, with a mix of rain showers through the region as well.

The Easy Fire, burning near the North Cascades Highway in the Methow Valley, is 29% contained. The Pioneer Fire—burning over 38,000 acres northwest of Chelan County—is currently 23% contained.

NWS is advising people to avoid hilltops, open fields, tall trees and any activities in the water during thunderstorms.

Trails, camps and cross-country zones are all closed within the Thunder, Ruby and Panther areas of the North Cascades National Park.

The nine-mile closure of the North Cascades Highway remains in effect due to both the mudslide and the ongoing Easy Fire, which has burnt over 2100 acres.
