BELLINGHAM, WA – A protest is planned to take place this weekend at the Peace Arch border crossing in Blaine.

The Northern Light reports the protest is organized by the Clean Air Alliance – Residents Opposing Biofuel in South Surrey, who are gathering in opposition to a proposed facility to be built less than a mile north of Peace Arch.

The biofuel facility would be built on Semiahmoo First Nation land and jointly owned by them along with Vancouver-based Andion Global Inc.

The planned construction comes after this summer’s announcement of $14.4 million in federal support for a facility that would annually convert 70,000 tons of food waste into biofuel.

The Clean Air Alliance list a number of concerns over the project including health risks to the area from the release of gases, and a high risk of explosion, citing over a half dozen explosions at similar facilities since 2015.

The protest is scheduled for 1 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 29.
