BELLINGHAM, WA. – (MyBellinghamNow.com) It is no secret that Bellingham locals love their beer, but a new study claims that we have the drunkest residents in the state.

Business website 24/7 Wall St. compared the percentage of adults who reported heavy or binge drinking in the past month across each state’s metropolitan areas. They found Bellingham to have the highest rate of excessive drinking in Washington at just under 23% of adults. That is a mark above the national average of 20% and well over the state average of 18%.

Binge drinking is defined by the study as consuming five or more drinks on one occasion for men or four or more drinks for women. The publication says the drunkest metro areas in the country lie in the Midwest and Far West, specifically in larger states with colder weather.
