BELLINGHAM, WA – (MyBellinghamNow.com) Do you know if you have unclaimed money? A database can help you find that out.

This Thursday – Feb. 1, 2024 – is the annual Unclaimed Property (UCP) Day in Washington. The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) partnered with the Washington Department of Revenue to let people know that they may have left some money on the table.

UCP comes from when owners don’t initiate activity on financial property for some years and the holders submit the money to the state. The Dept. of Revenue says that nearly 33 million people across the U.S. have unclaimed property. That means 1 in 7 have unpaid life insurance benefits, unused rebate cards and forgotten bank accounts among other financial property.

Washington’s UCP program broke records last year, with almost $139 million returned to thousands of residents, a nearly $50 million increase from the previous year. Holders reported UCP $322 million in unclaimed property last year, an all-time high by a $75 million margin.

The Washington Dept. of Revenue is hosting an Unclaimed Property website, where people can check for their unclaimed cash. NAUPA is sponsoring a free website called Missing Money, where you can check for UCP nationwide. The national website is based on participating states’ information with links to where to claim the property.
