The Seattle Kraken lost a tight one this afternoon.

They fell to the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in overtime.

Jaden Schwartz tied the game just over 7 minutes into the third period.

But Detroit’s Ben Chiarot scored in extra time to give the Red Wings the win.

Jared McCann scored a pair of goals in the loss.

The Kraken are back in action Thursday, as they’ll host the Vancouver Canucks in the second of a six-game homestand.

 

The Pac-12 has chosen a new commissioner to navigate the murky future of the conference.

Teresa Gould will succeed George Kliavkoff on March 1, becoming the first female commissioner of an Autonomy Five conference.

Gould was hired by the Pac-12 in 2018 and served as deputy commissioner.

 

The Washington State University men’s basketball team has made its way into the AP’s latest rankings.

They entered at No. 21 today, ending a 302-week poll drought.

The 20-6 Cougars are riding a seven-game win streak.

They have a big test this Thursday against fourth-ranked Arizona.

 

The Western Washington University men’s team suffered a 71-69 loss to Alaska Anchorage on Saturday for their third straight loss.

It was a tight game that featured 12 lead changes.

Forward Nic Welp led the team with 22 points on 10-12 shooting.

The Vikings now fall to 14-12 on the season and 6-9 in GNAC play.

 

The Western women’s team took an 85-63 win over Saint Martin’s on Senior Night. 

Senior Brooke Walling led the team with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Fellow senior Stephanie Peterson added 12 points and a pair of 3’s in the win.

The Vikings have won 12 of their last 13.

They now improve to 20-4 overall and 13-2 in conference play to remain in second place in the league standings.

 

Taking a look at the high school basketball scores from over the weekend…

The Meridian boys edged Nooksack Valley 67-65 to secure a spot in the 1A state tournament.

The Meridian girls weren’t as fortunate, they fell to Lynden Christian in a 62-12 blowout loss as the Lyncs advanced to state.

The Sehome girls had their season ended on Saturday, they lost to Archbishop Murphy 57-42.

The Anacortes boys took a tight 62-58 win over Cedarcrest to book a ticket to state.

 

Meanwhile, the Lummi Nation boys beat Neah Bay 53-47 to win the 1B District 1/2/3 title.

It’s their 22nd straight win as they now advance to the state tournament.

The Lummi Nation girls lost to Crosspoint 78-61 to finish fourth in their 1B tri-district tournament.

The top five teams advance, so the team will still move on to the state tournament.
