BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Whatcom County Jail inmate has died, and their cellmate was hospitalized after they suffered possible drug overdoses.

A sheriff’s department spokesperson says the pair were found Wednesday in conditions indicating drug overdoses.

Deputies immediately administered the opioid antidote naloxone and performed CPR on the inmates. Emergency medical personnel arrived and continued lifesaving treatment, but one inmate could not be revived. The other was transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center.

The circumstances of the inmate’s death are under investigation by Law Enforcement Mutual Aid Response Team (LEMART).

Sheriff Donnell Tanksley said in a statement that “no one should die while in our custody. Our staff and our jail processes are geared to protect incarcerated individuals.” He says they’ll be diligent in making sure dangerous drugs are kept out of the jail.
