PULLMAN, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – If you’re a new mom, you may want to think twice before using cannabis products.
A recent study by Washington State University (WSU) researchers shows that when mothers use cannabis products, THC shows up in their breast milk. The study also showed that when THC was detected in the milk, there was no consistent time when its concentration peaked or started to decline.
The research team studied milk from 20 breastfeeding mothers that provided details on their cannabis use. After the mothers abstained from consuming cannabis for at least 12 hours and then again at regular intervals following use.
Researchers found that cannabinoids were in every sample of milk even after than abstaining period. There was a peak amount of THC between 30 and 2 1/2 hours following use.
They note that the amount of THC they detected was low – with infants getting a 0.07 mg dose per day – and it’s unknown if that amount has an impact on an infant. A normal low-dose edible contains 2 mg of THC.
Other research has shown that cannabis is one of the most widely used drugs during breastfeeding. Many breastfeeding moms use cannabis to manage anxiety, other mental health issues or chronic pain, choosing cannabis over using other medications because they feel it’s safer.
