High levels of toxins produced by algae found in Wiser Lake

WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Residents are now advised to avoid contact with the water at Wiser Lake.

The Whatcom County Health Department says recent sampling found high levels of toxins that could be harmful to people and pets.

The sampling detected microcystins – a toxin produced by algae – that primarily affects the liver. The health department says the toxin levels recently found at Wiser Lake exceed the recreational guidelines set by the EPA and state Department of Health.

Limited contact with the water – like boating or fishing – doesn’t pose a significant risk. But waterskiing, swimming or riding a personal watercraft are riskier since people could accidentally swallow the water that way.

Pet owners are also advised not to let their pets swim or drink in the lake.
