FERNDALE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A bicycle rider was hit and killed by a train at a crossing in Ferndale Saturday afternoon.

The Ferndale Police Department says in a news release that the person was riding south on Hovander Road at about 2 p.m. when they collided with a railroad crossing bar.

The collision sent the person into the path of a moving train and they were fatally injured.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, the Washington State Patrol, and the Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office assisted Ferndale Police with the investigation.

The person’s identity has not been released pending notification of family members.
