BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Bellingham Police are investigating after a transgender high school student was beaten while off campus.
Bellingham Police Department spokesperson Megan Peters says the victim reported the assault to police on Oct. 22. They said that a group of teens beat them and yelled transphobic phrases at them on Cornwall Avenue near Whatcom Creek and York Street.
The victim’s parents told KOMO News that their child is dealing with concussion symptoms and is being evaluated for a traumatic brain injury.
Bellingham High School Principal Martin Atkins said in a letter to parents on Nov. 4 that they’re unable to mention more details due to privacy concerns. However, he emphasized that both the school and the district are committed to ensuring the safety of all students, regardless of their gender identity.
“We want to assure you that we take any allegations of violence and hate-motivated behavior very seriously,” Atkins said in the letter. “Incidents of hate speech and behavior are not only unacceptable but also have lasting and harmful impacts on our community. We are committed to healing and educating to strengthen and diversify our next generation of leaders. Our policies reflect this commitment, and we will continue to implement measures that promote respect, understanding, and safety for all students.”
It’s unclear if the suspected students have been punished or are under police investigation.
