OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Students from low-income families in Washington will soon be able to go to college for free.

Starting in January 2026, the state will guarantee free tuition at all public colleges and universities to students from families who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

The streamlined process stems from a new law that was signed this past spring aiming to reduce barriers to financial aid for low-income students.

The program has come in response to recent declines in enrollment and troubles that families have experienced with navigating the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. After it rolls out, the state will let students know if they’re eligible as early as 10th grade.

“We’re going to guarantee to you, you won’t have to pay tuition or fees at most public institutions so you can pick a community college, one of the regional universities or UW or WSU. It will be open to you without having to pay tuition,” said Michael Meotti, the executive director of the Washington Student Achievement Council.

Meotti explained that the state will still encourage students to apply for aid, but the new law will decrease state scholarship barriers.
