OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Washington is among more than 20 states that have sued the Trump administration over its move to end birthright citizenship.

Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown and three other AGs from Oregon, Arizona and Illinois filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Western Washington on Tuesday.

It came in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order, which prevents the children of undocumented immigrants who are born in the U.S. from gaining citizenship.

AG Brown called the move “unconstitutional” when speaking with reporters on Tuesday.

“This is plainly illegal. This one is fairly obvious,” Brown said. “Not only is it spelled out explicitly in our Constitution, the Supreme Court has specifically weighed in on this case – my hope is that every level of court would rule unanimously because of the well-established precedent.”

His lawsuit asserts that Trump’s order violates the 14th Amendment, which states that all people born in the U.S. are automatically citizens of the country. Brown says the order could block residents from receiving critical privileges of citizenship, including passports, health care benefits and more.

According to his lawsuit, about 400,000 children born in the U.S. in 2022 could be stripped of citizenship under the order, including about 11,000 in Washington.

A coalition of 18 other Democratic attorneys general, the city of San Francisco and the District of Columbia also filed a separate suit on Tuesday to challenge the executive order.
