SEATTLE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com, AP) A Seattle judge has temporarily blocked President Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship.
In his ruling on Thursday, U.S. District Judge John Coughenour called the president’s order “blatantly unconstitutional.”
The 14-day restraining order sought by Washington, Oregon, Arizona and Illinois was the first to get a hearing before a judge and applies nationally.
President Trump’s executive order would prevent the children of undocumented immigrants who are born in the U.S. from gaining citizenship.
The lawsuit argues that the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship for people born in the U.S., and that states have been interpreting the amendment that way for a century.
Coughenour said he’s been on the bench for more than four decades, and he couldn’t remember seeing another case where the action challenged was so clearly unconstitutional.
The case is one of five lawsuits being brought by 22 states and a number of immigrants’ rights groups across the country.
The Trump administration’s attorneys have clarified that the executive order only applies to people born after Feb. 19, when it’s slated to take effect.
