SUMAS, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Hikers looking to complete the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) will have to adhere to new guidelines if they want to cross the border into Canada.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced that hikers will have to go through an official Port of Entry if they want to finish the Canadian leg of the PCT.
Prior to the new rule on Jan. 27, people were allowed to walk the final 13 km of the trail across the border if they had a permit. CBSA said that their rules were updated to reflect U.S. policy, which does not allow hikers to enter from Canada on the trail under any circumstance.
The closest Point of Entry to the trail in Whatcom County is in Sumas. Another option for PCT hikers is the Oroville crossing in Okanogan County.
