OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – As freezing temperatures continue to hold their grip over our region, fire officials in Washington state are asking folks to be cautious when it comes to a hot topic.
National Burn Awareness Week began on Sunday, Feb. 2 and takes place through Saturday, Feb. 8. The Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging people to be aware of hazards that could lead to burn injuries, particularly inside of residences.
Children under the age of 4 are more prone to scalding, which are burns caused by hot water or steam. Fire Marshal Chad Cross says that people can avoid burn injuries by staying attentive when handling hot foods and keeping cords out of reach of pets and children.
He also suggests keeping water heaters below 120°F to avoid potential scalding. Those seeking more information on fire awareness can contact the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office at (360) 596-3904.
