As spring temperatures rise in Whatcom County, homeowners are encountering an uptick in insect activity. From persistent ants marching through kitchens to wood-boring beetles damaging decks, the seasonal surge is keeping local pest control companies like Bio Bug busy.

The region’s wet and mild climate creates ideal conditions for insect populations to thrive, making it a recurring problem for homeowners.

A Surge of Seasonal Pests

Northwest Washington residents have reported a variety of insects invading their homes in recent weeks. Carpenter ants, termites and moisture-loving pests such as silverfish and earwigs are among the most common intruders.

“The most common question we get is ‘Why did these [insects] get into my house?’ even if they maintain and seal up their house,” said Steve Cornwell, co-founder and president of Bio Bug.

According to Cornwell, insects like ants will enter a home foraging for food but also seeking shelter.

“We see them in houses with both great and poor sanitation,” Cornwell said.

Home Damage and Health Risks

While many pests are more of an annoyance than a danger, some can cause serious property damage. Carpenter ants can tunnel through wood, potentially weakening structural beams over time.

“Carpenter ants will also nest in foam insulation, but they will nest in wood, and they are a wood destroying organism,” said Cornwell.

Certain insects like fleas can also carry health risks by transmitting diseases to pets and humans.

Tips for Homeowners

Pest control professionals recommend several steps to prevent insects from returning:

  • Eliminate food sources: Clean up crumbs promptly, store food in sealed containers and avoid leaving pet food out overnight.
  • Seal entry points: Use caulk to seal cracks around windows, doors and foundation walls.
  • Reduce moisture: Fix leaks and improve ventilation in damp areas such as basements and bathrooms.
  • Keep landscaping tidy: Trim back vegetation that touches the house and remove wood debris near the home’s foundation.
