SKAGIT COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Cameras will begin watching for speeding drivers on I-5 in Skagit County this week, but you won’t get a ticket if they catch you.
The cameras on I-5 in Skagit County and I-90 in Spokane County are part of a pilot program created by the state legislature.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) says the goal is to get drivers to slow down to prevent accidents and injuries.
Drivers who are caught by the cameras will get a courtesy notice in the mail notifying the driver of their speed and the potential cost of a ticket. No fines will be issued through the program, and the notices won’t affect driving records.
The Skagit County cameras will monitor southbound I-5 between Bow Hill and Cook Roads beginning this Thursday, April 10.
WSDOT says that in 2023 there were 358 fatal or serious injury accidents in which speed was a factor on state highways alone.
