BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – One of our area’s most scenic highways continues to be closed without a definite timeline.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) says rocks continued to fall along Chuckanut Drive on Wednesday, April 23.
A pile of boulders roughly 30′ high and 150′ long still covers the road following the rockslide on Tuesday. It remains completely blocked from the Oyster Dome trailhead at milepost 10 to Chuckanut Manor at milepost 9.5.
WSDOT says engineers are continuing to assess the damage but have faced safety challenges. The agency will provide a timeline and cost estimate once the assessment is finished. WSDOT warns that the area is still considered an active slide zone and is urging people to stay away from the rubble.
Local attractions along the road, including Larrabee State Park, the Oyster Bar, Taylor Shellfish and Chuckanut Manor are still open.
