BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A fuel spill has forced a temporary closure on Bellingham’s Interurban Trail.
Bellingham Public Works spokesperson Stefanie Cilinceon says there was a fuel line break on a generator at the city’s Padden Creek Fish Passage Project on Sunday, Aug. 3.

The incident occurred when the contractor was off-site and leaked diesel near where the Interurban Trail intersects 12th Street.
According to the Washington State Department of Ecology, the spill released up to several hundred gallons of fuel and reached one-third of a mile downstream of Padden Creek.
The leak has since been contained and Ecology says no fuel reached Bellingham Bay.
The city is currently working with Ecology crews to clean up the spill.
The lower section of the Interurban Trail is temporarily closed from 10th Street and Donovan Avenue to 6th Street while the spill is being cleaned.
A timeline for the trail’s reopening and details on the impacts of the spill have not yet been announced.
