ALGER, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Your commute is about to get a bit easier if you’re travelling out of Whatcom County.

WSDOT said that I-5 in Alger will be returned to a two-lane pattern by 2 p.m. Friday, May 22. Crews put in a temporary lane crossover to begin work on a fish passage project.

The on-ramp to I-5 NB from Alger will remain closed through the end of the month.

Most major construction work on state roads will be paused for the Memorial Day Weekend, where millions of drivers are expected to clog roads across the country.

WSDOT estimated that afternoons will be busiest going northbound on I-5 up to the border between Thursday and Sunday. Southbound traffic in the same stretch is only expected to hit traffic hiccups around Sunday afternoon.

If your weekend plans involve cross-border travel, you’re being encouraged to prepare ahead of time. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is expecting crossing times to be higher than usual during the holiday weekend.

Travelers should have all their travel documents ready for presentation and to know which items should be declared before crossing. Any international travelers coming into the U.S. are urged to file an I-94 provisional form before heading towards the border.

While it’s legal in Washington state, marijuana remains a federally illegal substance and cannot be taken through border crossings.
