The Mariners are back tonight after topping baseball’s hottest team.

They’re playing Game 2 against the Philadelphia Phillies with a chance to clinch the series.

The M’s won 9-2 last night to snap the Phillies’ nine-game win streak. Cal Raleigh broke out of his slump to hit three home runs for the first time in his career.

Julio Rodriguez and Cole Young also homered as the Mariners shelled Phillies ace Zack Wheeler. Logan Gilbert gave up two runs over five innings to earn his team-leading 11th win of the season.

Seattle sits three games behind the Texas Rangers, who moved ahead of the Houston Astros last night for first place in the AL West.

George Kirby is on the mound tonight as they look to secure back-to-back series wins for the first time since early July. Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KPUG.

 

The Mariners are getting a key bat back in the lineup tonight.

The team reinstated J.P. Crawford from the 10-day injured list earlier today. He’s been out since July 30 with left wrist inflammation.

The team also announced that Bryan Woo will make his scheduled start tomorrow.

Woo skipped his previously scheduled start on Saturday after experiencing soreness in his throwing shoulder during his most recent outing against the Yankees. But general manager Justin Hollander says Woo feels great and there are no concerns about any ongoing injury.

Meanwhile, Hollander announced that rookie shortstop Colt Emerson will undergo season-ending surgery tomorrow to repair a partially dislocated tendon in his left wrist.

The team expects him to be ready for the start of next season.

One of the Seahawks’ top rookies won’t take the field this season.

The team announced today that second-round safety Bud Clark will miss the entire year after breaking his ankle on the first defensive play of Sunday’s preseason game against the Titans.

Second-year offensive lineman Mason Richman will also be out for the year after injuring his right leg. Richman was featured in HBO’s Hard Knocks series, which is releasing episode four at 6:00 tonight on HBO Max.

Washington’s representative at the Little League World Series has bowed out.

Soundview Little League out of Tacoma fell to Alabama 4-2 this afternoon in the consolation bracket. They’ve now been eliminated from the tournament.

Soundview won their first two matches to reach the U.S. winners bracket, but fell to Nevada on Sunday to go into survival mode in the double-elimination tournament before today’s loss.

College Football News

One of college football’s biggest conferences is taking a stand against NFL players coming back to college.

The Big Ten announced today that it will not allow any player who has declared for the NFL draft and withdrawn, appeared on an NFL roster or signed a contract with a pro league to be on a Big Ten roster.

It comes days after two NFL players parted with their respective teams to join LSU. They were able to return to college through a court order that granted athletes an unexpected fifth year of eligibility if they end their pro contracts and repay any pro earnings.

The SEC issued a statement yesterday saying athletes who sign pro contracts should not be allowed to return to college. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips told ESPN that his conference plans to discuss the topic this week.

NFL News

A new study has revealed some sobering effects of playing professional football.

The study, published today by the British Medical Journal, found that at least one in four NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had CTE.

There were 878 players in the sample. CTE can only be diagnosed after death, so most research has depended on brains donated by players or their families. 

The study’s lead author says their estimate of 25% is on the “low end” of outcomes.

The countdown is on as Western athletics get set to kick off this week

The Vikings’ soccer teams are playing a doubleheader in Bellingham on Thursday to open their season.

First, the women play Hawai’i Hilo at 4:00 before the men take the field at 7 against Chico State.

Meanwhile, the Viks’ 20th nationally-ranked volleyball team is facing a tough test when they play No. 4 Point Loma in Ellensburg at 4 for the Central Washington University Invitational. 

In other Western news, the school announced that Luke Bennett has stepped down as their golf director after eight years. Bennett also served as the men’s golf coach since 2013  and won 10 GNAC Coach of the Year awards.
