OLYMPIA, Wash. – Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson has joined attorneys general from across the nation in demanding that Hyundai and Kia make their cars harder to steal.

The AGs sent a letter charging the Korean manufacturers with a “lack of acceptance of responsibility” in what they call a crisis in thefts of the companies’ cars in recent years.

KOMO reports that, since 2015, almost all other car brands have included demobilizers that prevent a vehicle from starting if a coded key fob isn’t detected.

Kia and Hyundai did not make the devices standard until six years later.

That has made those models easy targets for thieves and online videos demonstrate how easily they can be taken.

Some insurance companies have even stopped insuring the makes.

The companies say they are rolling out software upgrades and giving steering wheel locks to owners of some of their vehicles.

The AGs say those efforts are not enough.
